Stellantis starts selling Leapmotor’s electric cars in Europe

The Leapmotor C10 is about the same length as the Tesla Model Y and has a 231 hp electric motor. It is available with battery packs of 53 or 70 kWh, and also with a range extender in the form of a petrol engine.

The Stellantis group has now launched the budget brand Leapmotor. Two models will soon go on sale in Europe.

The giant group Stellantis has shown the budget electric cars Citroën ë-C3 and Opel Frontera. The range of cheap electric cars will soon be expanded with a new brand.

It is about Leapmotor International, which is a joint venture company in which Stellantis owns 51 percent of the shares.

Now it is clear that Leapmotor will also be sold in Europe. The launch is planned for autumn 2024 and the idea is to try to compete with Chinese brands such as BYD and MG.

The Leapmotor T03 is a cheap small car with electric drive that challenges the BYD Dolphin and Dacia Spring.

The model was launched in 2020.

The first models to be sold on the European market are the mid-range SUV Leapmotor C10 with a range of 42 miles according to the WLTP driving cycle and the small car Leapmotor T03 with a range of 26.5 miles.

Already this year, Leapmotor aims to have 200 sales points around Europe. In the first stage, however, Sweden is not included in the plans.

The launch will be important for Stellantis to avoid penalty tax for high carbon dioxide emissions within the EU.

– This is a big step forward to solve the important problem of global warming with state-of-the-art electric car models that compete with existing Chinese brands, says Stellantischefen Carlos Tavares.
