A trial period is now being introduced on the AM card – “Can cost SEK 7,000 extra”

On June 1, a trial period for AM driving licenses will be introduced. Anyone who loses the card during the trial period must redo the entire education – “a noticeable expense for a young person”.

The AM driving license applies to EU mopeds (moped class 1) that go at a maximum of 45 km/h. AM driving license also gives the right to drive mopeds (45 km/h) and A-tractors (30 km/h).

From 1 June 2024, a trial period will be introduced for the AM qualification. This means that anyone who has their driving license revoked during the probationary period must repeat the training, theory test and driving test (driving test).

– One difference compared to the probationary period for a driver’s license for a passenger car is that you need to go through the mandatory training for an AM driver’s license before taking the test at the Swedish Transport Administration. The education costs approximately SEK 5,000 – 7,000 and it is a significant expense for a young person. Hopefully it will lead to more thoughtful and traffic-safe driving that saves lives, says Susanne Alger, investigator at the Swedish Transport Agency.

Anyone who has their AM driver’s license revoked for 12 months or more needs to apply for a new driver’s license permit – what used to be called a fitness certificate. And it can take a while to get a new driver’s license granted if you have done something that entails such a long revocation.

The legislator’s hope is that the probationary period will provide a certain preventive effect and, for example, prevent the driver from driving too fast or driving a vehicle that he or she does not have the right to drive.

– Our hope is that the introduction of a trial period for the driver’s license is another measure that contributes to a reduced number of accidents, both when it comes to accidents with mopeds and with A-tractors, says Susanne Alger.
