When you think of a taxi, you think of Mercedes. Rightly so, because the majority of taxis are still Mercedes-Benz.
It seems obvious, but just look around at the average taxi stop. Anything can be a taxi these days. We know the Toyota Prius as a taxi and of course the Tesla Model S, which Schiphol virtually made mandatory.
There are some exotic species to be found worldwide. What about the Fiat Marea Weekend that you often encounter as a taxi on Capri, Italy, in a rather special outfit?
In New York, all taxis also look the same with the well-known yellow livery. In London the taxis are of course all pretty much the same. At least you know immediately which part of the world you are in.
Dutch taxi often a Mercedes
Back to our country. In the Netherlands, four out of ten cars registered with blue plates are still Mercedes-Benz. Volkswagen is in second place. At a distance, because this brand does not yet reach half the numbers of the brand with the star.
The top three is completed by Toyota, which is doing good business with its hybrid taxis. Relative newcomer in the top ten is Tesla at number nine. More than a thousand Teslas drive around our country with a blue plate.
Of those Teslas, 344 are a Model Y, 298 are a Model 3, 263 are a Model S and with 100 units the Tesla Model
Fuel
While diesel has been phased out completely by lease cars and private individuals, two-thirds of the taxi fleet is still diesel. With only 879 taxis with a petrol engine and 185 with LPG, these drives actually play no role in taxi transport.
In terms of fuel, second place goes to fully electric. Every fifth taxi in our country is an EV. Even though Toyota is doing well in the rankings, only 6.5 percent are hybrid cars. That could very well be a diesel-hybrid taxi from Mercedes.
In any case, the conclusion is that Mercedes-Benz is still calling the shots in taxi land. The Chinese are still left behind here with 220 cars on blue plates. All brands together.
