Does this new Volkswagen crossover look familiar to you?

That’s possible, because there is a Volkswagen crossover that is actually a very ordinary rebadge.

The balance sheet of Volkswagen and its brands is very different worldwide than in Europe. For example, we can only enjoy VW, Skoda and SEAT in the ‘middle class’. In the US they only know VW, the only thing next to it for normal mortals is Audi. In China, Volkswagen is also a huge brand thanks to the Volkswagen-FAW joint venture. Although there was just room for Skoda, Volkswagen has covered all the bases in China.

SEAT in China

For example, SEAT has never crossed over to the Asian country. Technically yes: VW launched the budget brand Jetta with a sedan based on the Jetta (gee) and a rebadged SEAT Ateca called Jetta VS5. However, there is no official import of the SEAT brand.

ID.UNYX

Yet another SEAT is coming to China, at least a Cupra. Thanks to the wonderful world of Chinese type approval, an upcoming Volkswagen crossover has emerged. This one is called Volkswagen ID.UNYX and again looks familiar to us. It’s not a Volkswagen, at least, not in Europe.

Do you recognize him yet? Finding the right Volkswagen Group crossover is a bit like playing Where’s Wally, so we can reveal that it concerns the Cupra Tavascan. This is of course based on the MEB platform and shares most of its features with the Volkswagen ID.5. You don’t have to fear cannibalism, because the ID.5 is not sold in China.

To make the Volkswagen ID.UNYX a little more VW and a little less Cupra, the characteristic daytime running lights of the Cupra have been replaced by a simple light strip that continues into the ‘grille’. The back has a red continuous light bar that evokes a slightly more ID.4 feeling. The copper accents have of course also been thrown overboard, as these are unique to Cupra. However, the badges are gold, whether that still has meaning remains to be seen. There is little official about the ID.UNYX yet, so expect an official unveiling in the not too distant future.
