German electric car manufacturers are worried about cheap competition from China and market leader Tesla from the USA, but a look at the current registration figures shows that, at least in this country, there is currently no reason for complaint.

The German car industry says it is in crisis. The sluggish sales of electric cars and competition from abroad are particularly affecting manufacturers. The trade magazine Automobilwoche (paywall) has evaluated the new registrations of electric cars in Germany in August 2024. According to the website Elektroauto-news.de, the result paints a much less dramatic picture.

According to the report, two German manufacturers are currently leading the field. Tesla’s model Y With 1957 new registrations, it is still the most frequently purchased electric car in Germany, but across all models, Volkswagen and BMW more electric vehicles were put into circulation. Both companies are ranked first in the August rankings with a market share of 12.3 percent each.

Mercedes also stronger than Tesla

According to the report, Tesla also had to accept a drop in the overall ranking last month. Mercedes which also recorded more new registrations than Elon Musk’s US company. If you look at the new registrations on a model basis, Tesla’s lead is also no longer that big. In second place with 1849 new registrations is the Enyaq from VW subsidiary Skoda just behind the Model Y. Third place is taken by the VW belonging Cupra Bornand in fourth place is the VW ID.7. BMW appears with the iX1 and the i4 only appeared in seventh and eighth place. The bottom line is that every second newly registered electric car in August was of German production.

Competition from China not yet great

The much-vaunted threat from the Far East has not yet been reflected in new registrations. According to the report, German manufacturers currently have 39 electric car models on the market, giving them a market share of 54 percent. There are currently only 15 Chinese models in this country – and they account for a modest share of 2.5 percent.

A look at the total sales of German car manufacturers shows that BMW is way ahead in the local competition with 20.7 percent. Mercedes is responsible for 12.4 percent of all electric vehicles sold in Germany and in third place is Audi with 10.2 percent. VW, on the other hand, only comes in at 9.4 and Opel only 7.2 percent.
