Electric car registrations are plummeting

The development of electromobility in Germany slowed in March. The number of newly registered electric cars fell significantly.

(dpa/Car Whiz/KI) The registration figures for electric cars show a slowdown compared to the previous year. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), around 31,400 new cars with battery-electric drives (BEVs) were registered in March. This represents a decrease of almost 29 percent compared to March of the previous year. BEVs represented almost twelve percent of all new registrations in the month under review, which also represents a decline. In the same month last year, their share was almost 16 percent.

The federal government made changes to the funding measures for electric cars last year. The purchase bonus for commercially used electric cars was initially canceled, followed by the surprising cancellation of the bonus for private electric cars in the fall. Since these changes there has been a significant decline in demand for BEVs.

All in one vehicle market A total of 263,844 cars were newly registered in March, which corresponds to a decline of around six percent compared to the same month last year. The majority of these new registrations, more than 68 percent, were from commercial owners.
