Electric G-Class is priced

On many wish lists:

Mercedes-Benz used the Beijing motor show to launch its electric Geländewagen – a car many have been waiting a long time for. Today the price has been announced – the G 580 First Edition costs NOK 2,354,625 delivered to a dealer in Oslo.

Little has changed in terms of design when Mercedes now launches the G-Class with an electric drivetrain. They also promise accessibility on par with the versions with fossil powertrains. A large battery pack ensures a range of up to 473 kilometers

Iconic design

Small details distinguish the electric version from the fossil versions – for example, it can be supplied with a black grill with an animated light strip. Design elements such as a slightly raised hood and air curtains in the rear fenders are distinct for the all-electric model. The A-pillar has received new cladding, and together with a spoiler lip along the edge of the roof, these changes contribute to improved aerodynamics and increased acoustic comfort.

Classic elements such as the unmistakable door handles, robust protective strips and the distinctive turn signals remain unchanged. Another unique element is the rectangular box on the rear door where the spare wheel is normally stored. It is standard on the all-electric model and can be used to store items such as charging cables or tools. As an alternative, customers can choose the well-known spare wheel on the rear door instead.

Range of up to 473 kilometers

The battery capacity is 116 kWt and gives the electric G-Class a range of up to 473 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. The battery is strategically integrated into the vehicle’s frame structure, which results in a low center of gravity and helps to make the car more rigid. Furthermore, the battery is placed within a protective cabinet to protect against water and dirt.

The electric G-Class can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations, enabling an increase in state of charge from 10 to 80 percent in around half an hour. For home charging, it supports up to 11 kW via the powerful on-board charger, which ensures efficient charging from the charging box.

Protection under the car is essential for all off-road vehicles, and on an electric vehicle it is crucial that the battery is not damaged if the vehicle hits an object. Therefore, the protective plate is designed to provide a high level of protection.

Typical Geländewagen

The new electric G-Class benefits from 45 years of experience in the off-road segment and takes the G-Class into a new era of electric mobility. In some aspects, the electric version surpasses the models with a combustion engine. The icon continues to rely on a proven frame construction that has been reinforced on the electric version, as well as independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle. The electric motors are attached to the frame structure.

Here are the key figures for off-road performance:

  • Up to 100% climbing ability on suitable surfaces
  • Ground clearance between the axles of at least 250 mm
  • Maximum wading depth of 850 mm in water and mud
  • Stable driving on side slopes of up to 35°
  • Entry and exit angles of 32° and 30.7°
  • Breaking angle of 20.3°

Adaptive chassis

The suspension on the new electric G-Class includes adaptive damping as standard. This gives even more control in the terrain because the dampers compensate for uneven ground even better than passive dampers.

The car is equipped with a low range for off-road driving. Each motor located close to the wheel has its own gearbox, ensuring that the motors operate independently of each other. On each axle there are two electric motors, their respective gearboxes and a double inverter in a common housing. It ensures maximum torque and even temperature control.

Classic and forward-looking

The off-road characteristics of the G-Class have always been of the highest standards, and this continues with the new electric G-Class. Exclusive to this are G-TURN, G-STEERING and G-ROAR. With the former, the driver can turn the car almost on the spot.

With G-STEERING, the turning radius of the new electric G-Class can be significantly reduced when driving off-road or when driving on loose surfaces. This is achieved by controlling the torque individually on each wheel. This function is active at speeds up to 25 km/h.

The intelligent creep function gives the driver extra support when driving off-road by ensuring optimal progress, even on loose ground. This function maintains a preset speed, as a form of cruise control specially adapted for challenging terrain.

The Range Rover is going electric

G-ROAR adds a new sound experience to the new electric G-Class. This distinctive driving sound is inspired by the powerful V8 engines from the model series.

Digitized and luxurious interior

The interior has become more functional and luxurious with the integration of an infotainment system and a number of advanced safety and assistance systems. At the same time, the traditional elements such as the handle on the passenger side, and the off-road buttons in the middle, are still central elements in the interior. The new OFFROAD COCKPIT provides quick access to relevant functions for off-road driving.

If desired, the car can be upgraded with elements such as tempered cup holders, wireless charging for mobile phones and the MBUX High End Rear Seat Entertainment system. The new model is also available with KEYLESS-GO. It gives you the ability to unlock and close the doors just by pressing the button on the door handle, without having to physically press the key. The only prerequisite is that you have the key on you.

– We expect great interest when we soon open up orders for our legendary model in new electric guise, says information manager AndrĂ© Jaskiewicz at Mercedes-Benz Norway. He adds that the first cars will arrive in Norway in the autumn.
