This spectacular restomod is called Carbon Piranha
Another restomod? The business of implanting classic cars into modern technology is booming. Under the name Vision 148, a British company has published the first drawings of a spectacular project based on an original Ford Sierra RS 500 Cosworth released. But this restomod is different!
First of all, there is no well-known company behind the Vision 148but a small, dedicated team. Together with various partners, the restomod will become a reality. The next difference: There will be no small series, the Vision 148, codenamed Carbon Piranha, will be a one-off.
The basis of the Carbon Piranha is an original Ford Sierra RS 500 Cosworth – the number 148, hence the name Vision 148. The idea behind the ambitious project is to restore and reinvent the RS 500 Cosworth, which was originally only available in Great Britain, but without distorting the basic idea of the homologation model.
The basis is an original RS 500
It seems that the donor vehicle was stored in a container for a long time. Number 148 of only 500 RS 500 Cosworths built was recently in a rather pitiful state. But that is about to change!
Although the project, which was launched eight months ago, is still in its early stages, there is a concrete plan. First, the RS 500 will be dismantled down to the body shell and scanned in detail. The body parts will then be reproduced in real carbon, which explains the name Carbon Piranha.
The first renderings of the finished car look promising. The British artist Yasid Design is responsible for the spectacular look. The digital drawings clearly show the relationship to the Sierra RS 500 Cosworth, but the restomod, with its XXL wide body in visible carbon and the aero rims with extremely deep centers on the rear axle, looks like it came from Need for Speed.
The goal is an empty weight of less than 1000 kilos
Of course, the new edition also includes the double wing, which is THE distinguishing feature of the RS 500. The visible carbon body is not only for aesthetic reasons, but is also intended to reduce weight. One of the ambitious goals of the Carbon Piranha: an empty weight of under 1000 kilos.
When it comes to the engine, the team is getting professional support. Engine specialist Cosworth, who were able to get 227 hp and 277 Nm out of the original four-cylinder using a Garrett T04 turbocharger, a larger intercooler, a modified fuel pump and a revised cooling system, are supposed to give the restomod a boost. At the moment there are no concrete details about the planned power output, but a potential 300 hp at under 1000 kilos sounds like an excellent power-to-weight ratio.
However, since the project is still in its early stages, we will have to be patient. As far as sales are concerned, Vision 148 is taking a new approach, as the Carbon Piranha cannot be bought – at least not in the traditional sense. Instead, interested parties and supporters can choose between two memberships in the “Auto Vision Club”, which cost between 115 and 175 euros per month.
The unique piece can be won
At the end of the project, one lucky member will win the unique piece. Basically, this is a kind of crowdfunding project. We are excited to see how it continues and, as we wrote: This restomod is different!
