Ford to manufacture cheap electric cars – launched in 2026

With a new platform, there is a chance Ford Fiesta and Focus will be revived, as cheap electric cars.

Some time ago, Ford presented the revived model Ford Capri as an electric car. However, the American car manufacturer has abandoned plans to only sell electric cars in Europe after 2030. Now British Autocar reveals that Ford will develop a new platform that will make it possible to manufacture smaller and cheaper electric cars.

On the new platform, the Ford Fiesta and Focus (which will currently be produced with a combustion engine until 2025) can be revived as electric cars. Even the replacement for Puma can be based on the platform. The latter is to be launched as an electric car later this year.

– If you look at our global offering, we currently don’t have much in the affordable segment. The key for us is to be affordable, differentiated and profitable. For too long, we stayed in the affordable segment, and went either plus-minus zero, or at a loss, says Marin Gjaja, operational director of Ford’s electric car division to Autocar.

The development work with the new platform is led by Alan Clarke, who has previously worked at Tesla. So far, the platform is in the development stage, but the first model based on the new platform could be launched in 2026 or 2027.
