GM New Car Quality, Best for ‘3 Consecutive Years’…Beating Toyota and Hyundai Motor Group

General Motors (GM) has ranked first in six segments in the 2024 Initial Quality Study (IQS) by J.D. Power, a renowned U.S. market research firm, becoming the automaker with the most top-quality models for three consecutive years.

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study measures quality satisfaction based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) by counting initial quality complaints experienced about three months after purchasing a vehicle. GM received the highest rating in six of the 20 car segments, the most among manufacturers, beating out Toyota Group (4) and Hyundai Motor Group (4), and took the top spot for the third consecutive year.

GM received excellent evaluations in each segment through its brands such as Chevrolet and Cadillac. The Chevrolet brand’s Tahoe, Traverse, Equinox, and Silverado were ranked first in quality in each segment, and the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 beat the Lexus RX and Porsche Cayenne, respectively. Chevrolet also ranked second overall in the brand-by-brand initial quality survey, beating out Hyundai and Kia.

In particular, most of the GM models that received the highest ratings in this new car quality survey are also sold in Korea. In the Chevrolet brand, the full-size SUV Tahoe and the large SUV Traverse are sibling models that share the chassis and powertrain with the GMC Sierra, while the full-size pickup truck Silverado is available in Korea. The Cadillac brand’s large SUV XT6 is also available in Korea, and is expected to receive positive reviews from consumers.

Meanwhile, J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study, now in its 38th year, evaluates problems customers have experienced for approximately 90 days after purchasing a new vehicle. The results of this Initial Quality Study are derived from responses to 227 questions in 10 categories, including infotainment, functions, controls and displays, exterior, driving assistance, interior, powertrain, seats, driving experience, air conditioning, and unspecified, from a total of 99,144 new car buyers in 2024.
