Hardly anyone goes on holiday with a shared car

Going on holiday with your own car is great, but with a shared car? No thanks.

Not everyone has their own car, but they do have a driver’s license. Driving a shared car when you need a four-wheeler is a great solution. The undersigned never uses it in the Netherlands (because, own car). Abroad, yes, that’s where I typed this great article.

It is mainly about short trips that shared cars are used for. You can also think outside the box. What if you use a shared car for a longer period of time, for example to go on holiday with such a thing? Not many people do that. At RTL Z they have investigated that.

MyWheels, a well-known provider of shared cars in the Netherlands, expects that in 2024, around 1,000 rides will be a holiday trip. That’s not much. Still, the company does see a development, because that is an increase of 150 percent compared to last year. However, realize that in 2023, the Dutch will have made no less than 37 million holiday trips. 1,000 rides with a shared car doesn’t amount to much.

The average holiday trip with such a shared car lasts 13 days and on average people drive 1,900 kilometers. People take the car to countries such as Spain, Austria, Norway, Croatia, Germany, France and Italy.

Why would you specifically want to go on holiday with a shared car, I think. There are many car rental companies, where there is also more choice in terms of fleet. You are also more flexible, if you want you can drop off the rental car at a location of the company at the holiday destination. The shared car always has to return to the Netherlands.

The number of shared cars is relatively small in the Netherlands. Out of a fleet of 8.9 million cars, less than 8,000 are shared cars. That is based on figures for 2023. In short, a niche market. Going on holiday with a shared car is an even smaller niche.
