Hyundai and Kia Unveil Advanced Thermal Management Technology, Lowering Indoor Temperatures with Film

Hyundai and Kia held a ‘Heat Tech Day’ on the 22nd and unveiled three technologies that control the temperature inside a vehicle to make the interior space comfortable. Nano cooling film that is attached to windows to lower the interior temperature by up to 10 degrees, radiant heating system, and rapid coating heating glass will be applied to new cars in the future.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors have judged that a paradigm shift in heating and cooling is necessary in line with the transformation of vehicles from simple means of transportation to living spaces, and are developing various temperature control technologies ahead of others. The newly developed temperature control technology is scheduled to be applied sequentially to new vehicles in the future.

Nano cooling film can be attached to windows to lower the interior temperature by up to 10 degrees. Unlike existing tinting films that only block heat from the outside of the vehicle, nano cooling film has the function of blocking external heat and releasing heat from inside the vehicle to the outside. It also controls visible light transmittance to ensure safe driving.

Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the Nano Cooling Film applied to the Ioniq 6. Two vehicles with the same interior/exterior colors were prepared, one with the Nano Cooling Film applied and the other with the original factory condition. The interior temperature near the center console of the vehicle with the Nano Cooling Film applied was recorded at 36 degrees, while the normal vehicle recorded 48.5 degrees.

The radiant heating system was introduced through the Kia EV9. The radiant heating system is a technology that warms the bodies of passengers who get cold in the winter by applying a heating element that emits radiant heat to the area surrounding the passengers’ legs. If used with the existing air conditioning system, it can save 17% of energy.

In particular, since the dry air from the air conditioner does not directly touch the skin, comfortable heating without drying is expected. The core technology of the radiant heating system is a high-temperature film-type heating element and a burn prevention system. The radiant heating system can be installed on doors, center consoles, glove boxes, and the bottom of the steering column.

Metal-coated heating glass is the world’s first 48V system. Metal-coated heating glass inserts a metal coating consisting of about 20 layers between the laminated glass on the front of the vehicle, and the glass generates heat by itself to remove frost and moisture in winter. It can completely remove frost within 5 minutes.

In hot weather such as summer, the inserted metal coating can block at least 60% of solar energy coming from the outside without using electricity, which greatly contributes to improving the energy efficiency of the vehicle. In addition, the heating wire is completely invisible and there is no light scattering or distortion, providing the driver with a clear view.
