Hyundai invests heavily in hybrids – to double the number

New winds are blowing and hybrids are in vogue again. Hyundai believes in hybrids in the long term and will double the number in the model range.

When Hyundai presented its future strategy “Hyundai Way” during its investor days, it became clear that the ambitions are high. Until 2030, sales should increase by 30 percent, and hybrids play an important role.

Hyundai expects to sell 5.55 million cars in 2030, of which two million will be electric cars. Hybrid sales in Europe are expected to increase to 220,000 by 2028, from around 150,000 this year.

– The optimistic expectations regarding electrification have given way to increased concern. With the recent slowdown in electric car sales, demand for hybrids has increased, Hyundai CEO Jaehoon Chang told Automotive News.

Some of the electric cars will not be purely electric cars but so-called serial hybrids. In Swedish, this means that they have a combustion engine that acts as a range extender and charges the battery. Then the range can be over 90 miles.

Hyundai calls the series hybrids EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle). The first are to be launched in 2026.

Today, Hyundai has seven hybrid models in its global model range. That will be doubled to 14 by 2030. Then Hyundai will also have 21 electric cars.

Hyundai sees that hybrids will become popular in the United States, where opposition to electric cars is strong, but many want lower gas consumption.
