Kalmar RS6 is not an Audi but a Porsche

The Kalmar RS6 is not an Audi, but a Porsche: and yet not an RS2 either. But what is it?

The Porsche 911 Dakar is the Car Whiz Car of the Year 2024. No one would have dared to predict that, except for the genes who actually voted for it. And there were a lot! We secretly have a lot of fans in our editorial office. The biggest disadvantage of the 911 Dakar is its price. It is a seriously expensive car with a starting price of more than €300,000. And that’s before the infamous Porsche options.

For people who like to go off-roading with a Porsche 911 and want to spend a little less money on it, there is the Kalmar RS6. No, that is not an Audi but really a Porsche. The basis is the least popular 911 generation: the 996.

Slowly but surely, more and more companies are realizing that the 996 is a great basis to create something from. No restomod, but a GT3-like car is quite possible, as is a Dakar alternative, as in this case. The project is by Kalmar Automotive, which also converts 964s and Cayennes.

Small wheels

The Kalmar RS6 uses a proven recipe. But as is often the case, it is the elaboration of the recipe that determines whether it is successful or not. There is a lift kit that will take you 996 80mm in the wrong direction. There are also off-road rims (only 6×16 in size) and off-road tires. The decoration with the stickers, roof racks, spare wheel holder: it looks incredibly cool.

In terms of technology, Kalmar is proud of a specially developed limited slip differential. What exactly it does: I have no idea, but hopefully it will make it easier for you to get through sand, mud and snow. The drive options are endless. This is not entirely coincidental because that was also the case with Porwche. So you can choose from rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. A manual or automatic transmission. If you want a Mezger, you can have it either naturally aspirated (GT3 block) or blown (Turbo and GT2 engine).

You don’t have to expect anything exciting in the interior. No special furnishings, carpets or finishes. No, they stripped as much as possible to make the Kalmar RS-6 as light as possible. Recaro shell seats have then been installed to keep you in your place.

Then we arrive at the heading of costs. That’s not too bad, actually. It starts at about 45 grand. Then you will have to bring a 996 yourself. Fortunately, we still have a pink copy here in the Car Whiz Garage.
