KIA EV9 goes out the door with a big discount

KIA’s electric behemoth is leaving with a huge discount.

Not always, but sometimes, the American car market is a good indicator of the broader car market. In America there is much more than a stock model here. Dealers buy loads of cars, often without them having been sold yet. This allows the customer to immediately choose something from the often gigantic terrain.

Of course, it is also a risk for the dealer. If the hot goods are not sold, you are stuck with it. Or you have to cut the price considerably to get rid of the iron. Not nice for the dealer, but it does provide good insight into how much demand there really is for a certain car or a certain type of car, such as EVs.

In June 2024, there was good news for the electric car market in the United States. It grew by 3.1 percent, while the entire car market dipped by almost ten percent. However, if you look ‘behind the numbers’, it is not all hosanna for EVs either.

EVs were given huge discounts/financial benefits by dealers. For example, on a Toyota bZ4X you could expect an average discount of 11,761 dollars. On a Nissan Ariya 14,779 dollars. And on a KIA EV9 even a huge 18,061 dollars.

It’s a huge amount, especially when you realize that the EV9 has a starting price of 54,900 dollars (MSRP) in America. The full-fat GT-Line AWD that is the most expensive in the books is 73,900 dollars (MSRP). Well, that way even we can sell something. So yes, 108,026 EVs were sold in America in June. But whoever makes money from that…

I think that stunts with prices are a matter of time for certain brands if you look at the vehicle industry registrations YtD.

Whether KIA falls under this, I have no idea.

Kia recently started production of the EV9 in Georgia for the US market. There is a federal subsidy available on these American EV9s (America first). The current high rebates apply to the models built in Korea.
