After years of high-end electric cars, Lucid is looking into the more affordable corner with a new SUV.
It is a strategy we have seen with more new brands. First launch expensive electric models with a big margin, and then after a few years come up with more manageable models. Tesla is the best-known example of this.
Lucid currently only has cars in the higher segment with the Air and the Gravity. Those who are not shopping in the category of 80,000 euros or more have little to look for with this electric car brand from the United States. That will soon change, because the brand has made an important announcement.
Lucid says it is working on a new SUV in a lower segment. The brand is aiming for a price tag of less than 50,000 dollars. This would be the second SUV of the Americans, next to the Gravity.
With this purchase price, a Lucid has suddenly become more accessible to many people. Here in Europe, such a model could compete with cars like the Tesla Model Y or a Kia EV6. There are many electric cars in this crowded segment, so Lucid may still have a hard time.
The exterior is still a secret. Partly. With a teaser, Lucid has released a very dark image of the upcoming SUV. The shapes of the electric car are somewhat visible. Just like the striking Lucid written on the hood.
Anyone interested in such a cheaper Lucid SUV will have to be patient. The American car manufacturer wants to start production of this new model in 2026. Compared to the more expensive Gravity and Air, this SUV is a car with cheaper materials and a smaller battery.
It will soon be the third model for Lucid. Thanks to a financial injection from the sandbox, the Americans can start again. The sales of the Air and Gravity alone are not enough to continue growing. With this new capital, growth can be achieved, a cheaper model should finally provide the necessary volume for the brand. At least, that is what they hope.
