Lightweight new cars almost disappeared from the market
The number of new cars under one tonne continues to fall: in 2023, the KBA will only list two models in this category. Ten years ago, there were 15.
(dpa/Car Whiz/KI) The number of new cars weighing less than one tonne continues to decline. According to the statistics on new registrations for 2023 by environmental characteristics published by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), only two model series fall into this category: the Mitsubishi Mirage with a weight of 954 kilograms and the Suzuki Swift at 971 kilograms. In comparison, in 2022 there were still four model series and ten years ago there were even 15 model series listed below the one-ton limit.
The two model series mentioned recorded a total of almost 19,000 new registrations, which represents significantly less than one percent of all new registrations. The exact number of vehicles that individually weigh less than one ton is not shown separately in the statistics, as only aggregated data for the entire model series is given. In addition, the weight of an individual vehicle can vary depending on the equipment and engine.
It is therefore possible that individual vehicles from other model series, which are listed in the KBA statistics with an average weight of over one tonne, actually fall below the one tonne limit.
