The Skoda Elroq iV is going to become your neighbor’s new car. And his neighbor.
Volkswagen is not only a brand, but also a concern. There is nothing wrong with that in itself. Volkswagen once started as ‘Car for the People’, Strength through Joy and a few other statements that are no longer bon ton in 2024 without making a public apology.
The funny thing is that Volkswagen is not even the cheap volume brand in the hierarchy. On the contrary, Seat and Skoda are below that. Even Cupra seems to be slightly below VW’s price level. It’s great that they can charge so much money per car, but for affordable VW technology you don’t always have to go to VW.
Skoda Elroq iV
It goes without saying that Skoda has taken over that position. These are relatively neat but sober cars that are priced slightly cheaper than Volkswagens, while they are often slightly more functional.
We also see this if you want to drive an electric car. A Skoda Enyaq iV is slightly more affordable. The big problem is that there are no further electric Skodas (except for the Citigo-e iV, which has long been out of production).
That is about to change with the Elroq iV! At Skoda they like the ‘q’ at the end, so just like the Karoq, Kamiq and Enyaq, the Elroq has such a name. Not because you have a thought like Elroq, but because it is very recognizable Skoda. Simply Clever and all that.
MEB platform
The Elroq iV will be placed on the MEB platform, just like the Enyaq. However, the Elroq will be a full size smaller. It is not that Skoda has confirmed this itself, but what we receive from Autocar.
These British people are rarely wrong, so we take their word for it. So what is the Elroq? Well, in short, it is the Skoda brother of the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born.
Actually, that sounds like a very good plan and it’s stupid that we didn’t think of it before. Yes, readers like @dutchdriftking and @amghans perhaps, but why didn’t we think of this?
By the way, it will not be an ID.3 with a Skoda logo. Yes, the battery packs (58 kWh or 82 kWh) are identical, as are the platform and motors. One difference is that the Skoda Elroq iV is slightly higher. Don’t immediately think of an SUV or a crossover, but cars like the Seat Altea or Volkswagen Golf Plus aka Golf Sportsvan.
Modern Solid
The Skoda Elroq iV will be the first Skoda according to their new design language. It will be called ‘Modern Solid’. After that, other Skodas will adopt this design language.
So you immediately know what will happen to the Skodas that will subsequently receive a facelift. We first saw the Modern Solid design language on the Epiq Concept (which you see in the photos here).
Of course, nothing is known yet in terms of prices. Hopefully Skoda sees the opportunity to get the asking price below 30 grand. Then they would have an absolute winner. It is not entirely certain when we can expect the car, but we expect the first unveiling at the end of this year and delivery in mid-2025.
