Skoda wins big over VW in Used Car of the Year 2024 – we investigate why

The Skoda Enyaq takes the victory with significantly more points than the VW ID.4 for Used Car of the Year 2024. We examine what separates the two sister models.

The Used Car of the Year 2024 has just been revealed and the winner of it all is the popular and fully electric Skoda Enyaq. At Bilbasen, interest is high and it only gets even higher with the nice title on the CV.

Skoda Enyaq wins the final ahead of Cupra Born, Skoda Octavia, VW ID.4 and Ford Kuga in that order. With 200 points from the jury members, the Skoda is the clear favorite compared to its sister on the same platform, the VW ID.4 with only 80 points.

Skoda wins big over VW in Used Car of the Year 2024 – we investigate why

But how can that be? The cars are built on the same platform and with basically the same technology, so why does the Skoda win by such a large margin to the VW? Wouldn’t “you” rather have a VW than a Skoda? We try to find out in this article.

The data is basically the same

Skoda Enyaq wins a total of nine first places from the 17 jury members – including Enyaq, which was also the winner of the vote on Bilbasen’s Facebook. In comparison, there was only one jury member who believes that the VW ID.4 should win the title of Used Car of the Year 2024. That is remarkable.

When we look at the background data on the two sisters, there are striking similarities. The price to service the two is roughly the same and the same applies to how long it takes the dealers to sell the two cars.

Next, they are built on the same platform, they have basically the same range and they charge the battery just as quickly.

By the way, there are over 400 for sale of both Enyaq and ID.4 on Bilbasen and the users who have owned a copy rate them almost equally with 4.8 for Enyaq and 4.7 for ID.4 out of five possible.

The average price for the cars that are for sale on Bilbasen is highest for the Enyaq with DKK 338,000 against an average price of DKK 319,000 for the ID.4 And finally, the Skoda Enyaq has fallen by 6.9% in 2024 where the ID.4 has only fallen by 5.8%

On size, Enyaq has a slight upper hand, however. It is slightly larger in length and width and also has a larger luggage compartment.

Subjective values determine the choice

Data is one thing, but the subjective opinions often carry at least as much weight. We have asked the jury members, who have the Skoda Enyaq as the winner, why the choice fell on Skoda rather than VW.

Yasser Abaiji – Technical consultant, FDM
“For me it’s the layout of the cabin, the buttons on the steering wheel which work better than haptic buttons, switches for electric windows (the ID.4 only has two and a ‘rear switch’) and the use of the air conditioning (operated on the screen in the Enyaq but wears on ID.4).”

“Furthermore, the design is classic Skoda, and the car “doesn’t look like an electric car”.

Mikkel Thomsager – Editor-in-Chief, Bil Magasinet
“Technically speaking, the Skoda Enyaq does not stand above the ID.4, even if certain places in the cabin feel as if the Skoda appears with a better material finish. But above all, the Enyaq looks like a Skoda as we know it, while the ID.4 looks like a future VW with little DNA connection to previous models. I think that makes the difference.”

Henrik Dreboldt – Suitcase & Driving Gloves
“For me, it’s quite subjective, because the drivelines are the same. But the design is far more elegant on the Skoda. It has several small practical details from the Simply Clever Skoda drawer. Enyaq is often marginally cheaper, and the cabin is less covered in piano lacquer and has more physical buttons. The sum of the many little things makes it significantly more interesting in my eyes.”

Steen Bachmann – External editor-in-chief, Bil Magasinet
“The ID.4 is an excellent used purchase – we have tested it both new and used, and can recommend it. In a less tough field, it would certainly have a chance for the top three, but when there is only the possibility of awarding points to the best three in the top five in the final, I will give my points to Enyaq and Cupra Born. It’s something about the design that, in my opinion, is more clumsy compared to the other two.”

Out with the brand snobbery

All in all, there is nothing technical that speaks for Enyaq over ID.4. It’s up to you to decide whether you like the look, feel and operation of the Enyaq or the ID.4 better.

Personally, I agree. If one of the two is to be in my driveway, it will also be the Skoda. And let it be a call. If you still cling to the fact that there is more prestige in a VW than a Skoda, there is a big risk that you are deceiving yourself.
