Smart #5 official – practical electric SUV with Volvo technology

Do you think the Volvo EX30 is too cramped? Smart #5 is based on the same technology, but with more space, a larger battery and 800-volt technology that provides fast charging.

Smart is no longer synonymous with small city cars. Since Geely bought into the company, the course has changed. Now Smart will be associated with practical cars with smart solutions.

The Smart #5 is a premium mid-size SUV that competes with cars like the Volkswagen ID. 4, Volvo EX40 and Ford Explorer and more.

The division between the co-owners Geely and Mercedes is that the Germans manage the design and the Chinese the technology. Therefore, Smart #1, Smart #3 and Smart #5 are based on the same platform as the Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X.

The difference between Smart #5 and its smaller siblings is that it now houses a substantial battery of 100 kWh and that the voltage has been raised from 400 to 800 volts. It allows for faster charging. Charging from 10 to 80 percent should only take 14 minutes, despite the battery being so large.

Range is listed at 74 miles, but that’s with the more forgiving Chinese riding bike. A range according to European WLTP has not yet been announced.

Smart #5 is 470 centimeters long and the wheelbase is 290 cm. It provides generous interior spaces and plenty of space for storage. The #5 has 34 storage compartments, a 72-litre front trunk and a load space that can swallow 1,530 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Large screens unsurprisingly dominate the dashboard. There are two 13-inch screens for the infotainment system, one for the passenger. The driver has two 10-inch screens to look at and a 27-inch head up display.

At the beginning of 2025, it is the start of sales and deliveries for Smart #5 in Europe. In addition to price, we are also waiting for more information about the powertrain.
