Statistics: Sharp decline for electric cars – hybrids on the rise

Demand has reversed and the number of newly registered electric cars drops sharply by minus 31 percent in August. Instead, it is ordinary hybrids and plug-in hybrids that are in demand.

There were unusually few new cars registered during August. Partly due to lower demand. Partly because some manufacturers have problems with deliveries.

During the year, a clear trend has emerged: Electric cars are losing popularity and hybrids are back in demand.

In August, the number of newly registered electric cars fell by 31 percent compared to last year, according to figures from Mobility Sweden, despite a large delivery of the Tesla Model Y, which made that particular car the most common during the month.

Seen over the whole year, deliveries of electric cars have fallen by 21 percent.

The explanation is that few private individuals buy or lease electric cars today. It has become too expensive. But they would like to save soup money and then the choice goes to some kind of hybrid.

56 percent of all cars newly registered in August were plug-in (electric cars or plug-in hybrids). Electric cars accounted for 36 percent. 70 percent of electric cars are bought or leased by companies.
