This has everything to do with the closing of the Heinenoord Tunnel.
Hurray, the summer holidays have started. And hurray, you can see that on the Dutch roads. The quieter traffic in the Netherlands is the perfect moment for Rijkswaterstaat to carry out road works on a large scale. Those who stay in the Netherlands will notice this.
For example, the coming weeks on the A29 in connection with work on the Heinenoordtunnel. The tunnel between Rotterdam towards the south of the country was closed to all traffic at 22:00 on Friday evening. The tunnel will remain closed for two weeks. The tunnel will not reopen to traffic until Friday 9 August.
The Heinenoordtunnel is located just below Barendrecht. The tunnel normally takes traffic towards Oud-Beijerland and Mijnsheerenland. Or even further south if you are coming from the direction of Barendrecht. Rijkswaterstaat has set up diversions. For example, it is advised to take a detour via the A16 and the N217. Those who need to go to Bergen op Zoom or Zierikzee can use the A17, A16 or the A59.
This tunnel dates from 1969 and is due for a thorough renovation. According to Rijkswaterstaat, approximately 110,000 vehicles drive through the tunnel every day. The tunnel is a link for traffic towards the southernmost point of South Holland, West Brabant, Zeeland and international (freight) traffic. By carrying out the work during the holidays, Rijkswaterstaat hopes to prevent inconvenience and traffic jams as much as possible.
For traffic that needs to be in that region in the Netherlands, there is no other option than to take a detour. Those who use public transport will hardly notice it at all. The special tube for agricultural traffic has been made suitable for the buses of Connexxion and Arriva, so that buses can continue to drive through the tunnel. The bicycle tube of the Second Heinenoord Tunnel will also remain open. It is mainly car traffic that is affected by the closure. With that we say stay away from the A29, I repeat, stay away from the A29. So take a detour.
