The EU stands firm: Stopping petrol and diesel by 2035

Message after Ursula Von der Leyen was re-elected as President of the European Commission.

The EU’s goal to stop new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 remains firm.

It became clear after Ursula von der Leyen was elected president of the European Commission for another term of five years.

In order to be re-elected, she had to compromise to get both conservatives and her friends on her side. She did this by expressing herself in a politically neutral manner bordering on incomprehensible.

“The 2035 climate neutrality target for cars … will require a technology-neutral approach, with e-fuels having a role to play through a targeted amendment to the regulation as part of the planned review,” her program says.

This means that she does not want to change the decision on the transition to electric cars from 2035, according to the American web magazine Politico.

The car industry has lobbied for the limit to be moved forward. Renault CEO Luca de Meo expressed doubts a few days after the election. Among other things, he pointed to the reduced interest in electric cars among car buyers.

– The truth is that we are not yet on the right track to achieve one hundred percent electric cars by 2035. That is the truth. If customers do not follow us, we are all responsible. We have to cut costs, he said according to the French financial newspaper Les Echos.
