The Green Party has previously lobbied for an electric car bonus for rural residents. Now the government is on the same line.
It’s almost two years since the government removed the electric car bonus overnight. It has received harsh criticism from several quarters. Instead, a scrapping premium has been introduced for those who get rid of an old car and buy or lease an electric car.
But now the electric car bonus can come back – at least partially. During the next year, ten million kroner will be set aside to prepare the introduction of the EU’s social climate fund, and as part of it, an electric car premium is proposed that is aimed at certain groups – for example, residents in sparsely populated areas.
Introducing an electric car bonus for rural residents is a proposal that the Green Party has previously considered.
Several other countries or regions have or plan to introduce an electric car bonus linked to the car buyer’s income, including France and California. The French bonus had to be paused due to huge interest. Swedish researchers have also advocated this type of bonus.
Germany has stopped the country’s electric car bonus, but after sales plummeted, it is now to be reintroduced.
Exactly how the bonus will be designed is unclear. Alongside the bonus, the government must extend and expand the investment in charging infrastructure for heavy vehicles.
