The Onvo L60 challenges the Tesla Model Y with range and space

Nio’s low-cost brand Onvo is to challenge Tesla. The new Onvo L60 is a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y and can change the battery at Nio’s battery stations.

The Onvo L60 is the first car model from Nio’s new low-cost Onvo brand. The name is an abbreviation for “on voyage”. The L60 has now been launched in China, but a global expansion is to take place later in the year.

The Onvu L60 can be described as an SUV-coupe and the company is clear that they measure themselves against Tesla, and the L60 takes aim at the Tesla Model Y.

Behind the design is the former Bentley and Skoda designer Raul Pires, who worked for twenty years at VAG.

In order to compete with the Tesla Model Y and be able to offer longer range, Onvo has worked hard on the bodywork to bring down the air resistance to 0.229.

According to the Chinese driving cycle, the Onvo L60 consumes 12.1 kWh/100 km. It is a utopian figure, but it is interesting to compare it with the Tesla Model Y, which consumes 12.5 kWh/100 km according to the same measurement method. A difference of 3.2 percent.

Like the Nio, the Onvo L60 can change the battery on the Nio battery exchange station of generations three and four. The L60 will be sold with three different battery sizes giving a range of 555, 730 or 1000 kilometers according to the Chinese driving cycle CLTC which should be taken with a big pinch of salt.

Onvo doesn’t show much of the interior. However, we are told that there is a centrally located 17-inch infotainment screen. There is an 8-inch screen in the back seat. The car also has a head up display.

In China, the Onvo L60 costs about SEK 30,000 less than the equivalent Tesla Model Y. The L60 will be sold with rear or all-wheel drive.

Onvo L60 is 489 cm long, 193 cm wide and 161 cm high. The wheelbase is 295 cm. in this cocky video, Onvo makes a long list of comparisons with the Tesla Model Y.
