The Swedish Transport Agency wants to stop cheating with A tractors

With a new proposal, the Swedish Transport Agency hopes to deal with speed cheating in many A tractors.

The rules for A tractors have been tightened in several rounds. Now requirements for, for example, seat belts and winter tires apply. But it is still relatively easy to “cheat” the speed limit so that the A-tractor can be driven faster than permitted.

The Swedish Transport Agency has now drawn up a proposal for new technical requirements to deal with the problem. The car can either have a speed controller that must be connected to the car’s CAN bus system or a mechanical speed limitation through requirements for gearing as today.

The changes do not apply to the A tractors that are in traffic today. But if an A-tractor has been tampered with and stopped by the police, the owner must have the car registered again when it meets the requirements.

More must follow the rules

The goal is for the new rules to increase traffic safety and get more people to follow the rules, according to Josefine Montelius who is an investigator at the Swedish Transport Agency. According to her, a so-called function-based rule applies today, which means that it is only determined to The A-tractor must have a speed limit – not exactly how it must be achieved.

– This has led to the fact that today there are many different technical solutions for speed limits, which has opened up many different ways to manipulate, she says to Car Whiz team.

According to her, the difference with the new rules is that it becomes clearer how an A-tractor must be speed limited.

– With a uniform technical solution, it will be easier for the police, inspection bodies and parents to learn how the technology works and thus be able to check whether an A-tractor has actually been tampered with or not.

The idea is that the new rules will come into force in autumn 2025.
