Verstappen: “I had no chance at all”

Max Verstappen comes to a shocking conclusion after the race in Baku. He says he had absolutely no chance.

The grapes are sour at Red Bull Racing. They will probably still win the championship with Max Verstappen. If only because Norris will not win 8 points every race on our hero and the rest have even less chance to close the gap. But that everything is going smoothly for Max and team Red Bull, nobody can claim anymore.

After the failure in Monza, the team was hopeful that the main problem had been identified and that they would move forward again from there. Adjustments were made to the RB20 and Perez called it the best update in a long time. Now the Mexican did indeed go quite well this weekend, so we understand that. The only problem is: when Checo qualifies fourth, Max is usually first. Only this time he was sixth. So our hero can’t handle this version of the RB20 that Sergio likes.

It shows once again how fickle F1 can be. After today’s race, you would almost think that if the team only listened to Checo for the development of the car, he might have the upper hand. But to the Mexican’s disadvantage, he did not pull the chestnuts out of the fire. Instead, he crashed with Sainz on the last lap.

That still gave our hero fifth place, but on pure speed he would have only finished seventh this weekend. And that only because Hamilton also had a particularly mediocre weekend. Max once again lost three points to Norris. Provided he is allowed to keep his fifth place from the FIA.

A penalty is still looming for overtaking cars during a VSC phase after the finish. Hulkenberg and the two Alpine drivers must also report for this. It will probably end with a whimper, although with a 10-second penalty our hero loses P5 and two points to Alonso. In any case, it was not all great today. Max is, as always, clear after the race to Viaplay:

One wheel kept coming off the ground, which made me bounce around in all directions in all the slow corners. It was like a go-kart. And if you don’t have any contact with the asphalt, you don’t have any grip. That’s why I felt like it was going nowhere. I just couldn’t do anything with it. That was the problem. Of course, you also slide more. These tires are very sensitive to that sliding, because the temperature goes up. Everything becomes an even bigger problem then. Yeah, I didn’t stand a chance at all.

Max Verstappen, drove a trike today

Whereof act. Will this malaise really cost Verstappen a championship? Let us know in the comments!

Why did Perez compete for the win? The car wasn’t that bad, only Perez is on Baku, with finally equal material, so better.
