Volvo backs down from electric car promise: “We are flexible”

Volvo can continue to sell cars without a charging connector after 2030, the company states in a press release.

For several years, Volvo has made a big deal out of the fact that the brand will only sell electric cars in 2030. But when the demand for electric cars now drops, Volvo chooses to lower the level of ambition.

In a press release, Volvo Cars states that “90 to 100 percent” of sales should consist of electrified cars in 2030. By that, Volvo means electric cars or plug-in hybrids, not mild hybrids.

This means that models with internal combustion engines will remain even after that. “The remaining 0 to 10 percent will make it possible to sell a limited number of mild hybrid models, if necessary,” states Volvo.

As justification, Volvo states that the expansion of charging infrastructure has been slower than expected, that the electric car discount has been withdrawn in many countries and the EU’s punitive tariffs on Chinese-built electric cars

At the same time, Volvo emphasizes that electrification is an “important pillar” in the product strategy and that the long-term goal is to become a fully electric car company.

– We are firmly convinced that our future is electric, says Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars.

As recently as July, there were reports that Volvo would back out of the promise of electric cars, but this was strongly denied by Volvo.
