Volvo EX90 first car with battery pass

Volvo EX90 first car with battery pass

In 2027, a so-called battery pass will become mandatory for new electric cars within the EU. Volvo will be at the forefront with the EX90, which will receive the first battery pass ever.

When production of the Volvo EX90 starts, the model will be the first to be equipped with a so-called battery pass, reports Reuters.

From February 2027, battery passports will be mandatory for electric cars within the EU. In the passport, the origin of the materials, components, reused material and carbon footprint must be documented.

The pass has been developed through a collaboration between Volvo, Geely and the British startup Circulor. Blockchain technology is used to map companies’ supply chains. The system took five years to develop.

Volvo believes that the reason why the car manufacturer is so early in launching the car pass is that they want to be honest and transparent with the car buyers. While the full passport will be sent to the relevant authorities, the car owner can see a summary including the battery health, by using a QR code located on the inside of the driver’s door.

Production of the EX90 has now started at the factory in Charleston, USA, while deliveries to customers will begin in the second half of this year.
