The Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman are being discontinued. According to Motor One, an overseas automobile media outlet, the 718 Boxster and Cayman will only be produced until the middle of next year, and purely electric sports cars will be released to replace the two vehicles in the future. The Porsche Macan will be operated with both internal combustion engines and electric vehicles, and the internal combustion engine will be discontinued in 2026.
The 718 Boxster, Cayman, and Macan internal combustion engine discontinuation is mainly due to stricter European regulations. The 718 Boxster, Cayman, and Macan have been discontinued in Europe because they do not meet the new European cybersecurity regulations that come into effect this month. European cybersecurity laws are laws related to vehicle hacking, etc.
However, the Boxster RS Spyder and Cayman GT4 RS will continue to be sold in small quantities in Europe. The 718 Boxster and Cayman will be discontinued in mid-2025, and the Macan with an internal combustion engine in 2026. The successors to the 718 Boxster and Cayman will be purely electric, and the new Macan was unveiled as an electric car earlier this year.
A Porsche official said in an interview with foreign media outlets, “The purely electric sports car that replaces the 718 Boxster and Cayman will be a really fun car. Porsche will focus on developing the next generation of electric vehicles until mid-2026. We also do not think that high sales volumes can be Porsche’s benchmark.”
Meanwhile, Porsche Korea unveiled the new Macan Electric last month, announcing its launch in the second half of this year. The Macan Electric is the brand’s first electric SUV and is based on the PPE platform. It features a larger body compared to internal combustion engines, a wider interior, a digitalized interior, and a driving range of up to 613 km (WLTP).
