On holiday with a motorhome: How expensive can lawns be?

If you go on holiday with a motorhome, you have to think about a lot of things. Including the speed limit – which can result in severe penalties!

Anyone with MotorhomeIf you are going on holiday with a campervan, caravan or similar, you should know how fast you are allowed to drive with these vehicles. If you do not stick to the speed limit, you can expect a hefty fine. It would be doubly annoying if your holiday budget was burdened in this way.

So how fast can you drive in Germany? According to the current catalogue of fines, the penalties for exceeding the maximum permitted speed with a motorhome depend on the permissible total weight of the vehicle.

This is how fast you can drive in Germany

Different speed limits apply to motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes than to those over 3.5 tonnes. On certain sections of motorway that are approved for this purpose, for example, many motorhomes are even allowed to drive faster than 130 km/h.

  • Motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes: 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h outside urban areas, no limit on the motorway
  • Motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes with trailer: 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h outside town, 80 km/h on the motorway
  • Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes: 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h outside town, 100 km/h on the motorway
  • Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes with trailer: 50 km/h in town, 60 km/h outside town, 80 km/h on the motorway
If the driver of a motorhome with a total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes is driving 16 to 20 km/h too fast in an urban area, a fine of 98.50 euros will be due; from 21 to 25 km/h, a fine of 143.50 euros plus one point in Flensburg will be awarded.

Lawns can be expensive – this also applies to vacation trips with motorhomes and the like.

Even stricter rules apply to motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes: A speeding violation of 21 to 25 km/h in town results in a fine of 203.50 euros and one point in Flensburg. If the violation is 26 to 30 km/h, the fine increases to 263.50 euros, plus two points and a one-month driving ban. You can find a complete overview here.
