Production stop at Fiat plant Mirafiori

Production stop for this popular electric car
Production stop at Fiat plant Mirafiori

Production of the Fiat 500e at the Italian main plant in Mirafiori is being suspended. The reason for this is not only the lack of demand.

At Fiat’s traditional Mirafiori plant in Turin, at least for the Fiat 500e production lines are currently at a standstill. Due to a lack of demand for the small electric car, production will be paused for four weeks, parent company Stellantis has announced.

Expensive mini car

As the online magazine InsideEV reports, overproduction is not the only reason why customers are so hard-pressed to get excited about the small car. The price of the very compact city car is likely to deter many potential buyers despite its iconic design. With a new price of around 30,000 euros for the basic version with 93 hp, a 24 kWh battery and a range of around 190 kilometers, the model is rather expensive compared to the competition. Alternatives such as the new Citroën ë-C3 not only go further, but also cost around 7,000 euros less.

New start in the traditional Turin factory

It won’t just be a break in production. Stellantis wants to invest money in the Turin plant and the 500e model and is planning some innovations to boost sales. According to a Reuters report, the electric car will be equipped with a more powerful battery in the future, and a 500 model with a hybrid drive will also roll off the production line. The planned launch date is between 2025 and 2026.
