Bold: Toyota builds a fat GR Supra with V8

Even more power from the Toyota GR Supra with a monstrously thick V8, Toyota does it.

What did Toyota have to endure when the fifth generation Supra came on the market. The device built in collaboration with BMW does indeed have more BMW technology on board than Toyota technology, but why is that so bad? That B58 engine is a fine block and this way Toyota can sell a nice sports car for a reasonable price (the Netherlands and their BPM do not count).

Own engine

The choice for that BMW engine has to do with the fact that Toyota had no sports car base and actually no suitable engine for a Supra successor. This of course because Toyota wanted to use a straight-six, just like the Supra JZA80. Maybe that’s where it went wrong. Why not just put a really big V8 in the front? Well, that’s finally happening. By Toyota itself!

V8 Supercars

For those who have already broken their piggy bank: unfortunately, this is not a series production model. So glue it back together. Toyota wants to participate in the V8 Supercars in Australia with the GR Supra. You probably know that series as a nice Australian way for Ford drivers to tackle Holden drivers on the track, or from the Bathurst 1000. Because both Ford and GM are no longer focusing on Australia, the door was open for other manufacturers to participate. Including Toyota, from 2026. With the Supra, they have a potential candidate, provided it can meet the requirements. And that means: V8.

Lexus V8

The V8 in question that will be installed in the Toyota GR Supra is the well-known 2UR-GSE. This engine also powers everything that has an F on it at Lexus, except the LFA. The 5.0 liter unit still has to be adapted to the series, it will be announced later how that should happen. It also seems that Toyota does not have to do much to the body of the Supra to make the V8 fit.

So maybe after gluing it back together, your piggy bank will have to be broken again if Toyota decides to introduce a limited-edition production version of the V8 Supra.
