Up to 38.1 percent surcharge for electric cars from German manufacturers
China punitive tariffs also affect BMW, Mercedes and VW

The punitive tariffs planned by the European Commission for electric cars manufactured in China will also affect German car manufacturers. These models are threatened with high taxes!

The European Commission wants to get serious: It is considering additional import duties for electric cars manufactured in China. China is said to have given manufacturers high subsidies and thus a competitive advantage over their competitors in Europe. This is the result of an EU investigation.

This involves tariffs of up to 38.1 percent for models from manufacturers BYD, Geely and SAIC. But it is not just Chinese manufacturers who are affected. German car manufacturers also build some cars in China. The tariffs are to apply to all electric cars that are exported to Europe. This means that some models from German car manufacturers are also subject to the regulation.

German car manufacturers also affected by Chinese tariffs

The tariffs are not yet fixed – whether they actually have to be paid depends, according to media reports, on whether another solution can be found with China.

The level of tariffs also varies greatly, with 38.1 percent being the highest percentage. For example, an import tariff of 17.4 percent is planned for BYD and 20 percent for Geely. Tesla for example (the US manufacturer produces the Model3 In China (in particular), the figure is said to be 21 percent.

And what about the German car manufacturers?

BMW for example, builds the iX3 in Shenyang, according to the EU Commission, 21.6 percent would be due if additional tariffs were introduced.

In addition, Mini Cooper and Mini Aceman is produced in China. The punitive tariff would also be added here. Mini has not yet been explicitly mentioned on the EU list. Accordingly, the highest rate, i.e. 38.1 percent, would have to be assumed here. The Munich-based company had founded the joint venture “Spotlight Automotive” with the Chinese group Great Wall Motor.

The first electric Mini, the predecessor of the latest model, is one of the best-selling electric vehicles from the BMW Group. Therefore, high customs duties for this model would BMW hit particularly hard.

The electric SUV Tavascan the VW brand Seat Leon is affected. The Tavascan is built in Anhui, China, which could also mean a punitive tariff of 38.1 percent.

And also at Smart It is not yet clear how high the additional tariff will be. Mercedes and Geely have a 50% stake in the electric car brand. Here too, the final stake could be 38.1 percent.
