Electric car sales down the drain

Electric car sales down the drain

Sales of electric cars in Europe have plummeted.

With the brand new cabinet plans, car industries are complaining bitterly about an unreliable government. This would make electric cars less attractive to consumers. However, at a European level, the EV as a whole appears to be less popular. This is evident from new figures from ACEA.

European electric car sales

In August of this year, 92,627 electric cars were sold. That is a decrease of no less than 44 percent compared to August 2023. Remarkable, because compared to a year ago, only more electric models have been added. So there is more choice, but the market is not waiting for these cars.

Last year, electric cars still accounted for a European market share of 21 percent. That has now fallen to 14.4 percent. The largest markets where buyers are abandoning electric cars are Germany and France. The Germans in particular seem to have had enough of EVs. Sales have fallen by as much as 69 percent. In France, sales have fallen by a good 33 percent.

Hybrid is popular

While EVs continue to gather dust in showrooms, hybrid models are selling well. With 201,552 cars sold, that’s an increase of 6.6 percent year-on-year. Sales of traditional petrol and diesel cars fell by 17.1 percent and 26.4 percent.

Despite the rise in hybrid sales, European car sales fell by more than 18 percent in 2024. However, the market still saw a 1.4 percent increase in the period from January to August. August was an exception.

The fact that electric car sales are not doing well fits the picture that car manufacturers are painting. The Volkswagen Group, among others, sounded the alarm earlier this month. The group has invested billions in electric cars, but demand is lagging behind. That is now reflected in the figures.
