GP Canada

For many, Canada is a highlight on the calendar. It’s not the most beautiful circuit (we’ll get to that later) or the greatest ambiance, but with changeable weather conditions, overtaking opportunities and a track that is constantly evolving, it is never boring. The first Canadian GP was held in 1961 and was won by Peter Ryan in his Lotus-Climax. That race did not yet count towards the world championship.

That has only been the case since 1967. Then Jack Brabham won in the Brabham. Like the previous editions, that race was held at Mosport Park. The Canda GP was then held at Mont-Tremblant, Mosport Par, Circuit Ile Notre-Dame. By the way, that is simply the previous name of the circuit in Montreal that we now know as Gilles Villeneuve.

Both Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher have won this race seven times. Max Verstappen has won the race twice, in 2022 and in 2023. The Scuderia Ferrari is by far the most successful team here: they have won the Canadian Grand Prix 14 times.

The circuit: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

As we said, it is a street circuit, but completely different from Monaco. It is also a semi-permanent street circuit. Some parts of the track are purely for the GP circuit, other parts are also public roads.

It is a combination of slow corners and a few very fast parts. This makes it difficult for the teams to find a good setting. The circuit is extremely hard on the brakes (Jos Verstappen can talk about this in 2001). It is a fairly tough track for the tires. Because it is not a permanent circuit, the track must be ‘made’ with rubber.

The more rubber on the track, the faster. It sometimes rains in Montreal around this time of year, so the drivers start all over again. Furthermore, the circuit is 4.361 km long (so 70 laps) and there are 14 bends and we drive clockwise. We cannot discuss Circuit Gilles without mentioning the Wall of Champions. When entering the straight you want to carry as much speed as possible, but you come (very) close to a concrete wall. Many an ego has been destroyed there.

GP Canada 2023

To get an idea of the times and proportions, let’s take a look at last year’s performance.

Qualification

It was a very wet qualifying session. That is why the Q3 times are significantly slower than the Q1 and Q2 times. That also explains the special Top 3. Max Verstappen took pole position with 1:25.858, but behind him was Nico Hülkenberg with 1:27.102 and Fernando Alonso took P3 (1:27.286).

Fastest lap

Sergio Pérez (P6) had more than enough margin over Alexander Albon (P7) and went in for fresh tires at the end of the race and set a time of 1:14.481.

Read all about the possible strategies, weather forecasts and other things we can already reveal about the 2024 Canadian GP here

What is the position at the start of the GP Canda 2024?

Max Verstappen leads the championship with 31 points over Charles Leclerc. Verstappen is lucky that if he does not win, there is no driver who wins by default. Sergio Pérez needs to show Red Bull that his contract has not been extended for nothing, because he is 5th.

GP Canada 2024

In terms of teams it is much more exciting, remarkably enough. Red Bull Racing leads the championship with 276 points, while Ferrari is close behind with 252 points.

Which tires will Pirelli bring for the 2024 Canadian GP?

The 3 softest possible tires, just like last race. So the C3 band is hard (white), the C4 band is (yellow) and the C5 band is soft (red). Canada is quite hard on the tires compared to Monaco, but it is not too bad.

What strategies are possible for the 2024 Canadian GP?

Canada is quite hard on the tires compared to Monaco, but it is not too bad. With careful driving you can make quite long stints. The most common choice last year was to start on yellow and then quickly switch to white. Then 30 laps before the end white again. Last year, Alexander Albon managed to complete 58 laps on white (and thus achieved a World Championship point!).

Weather forecast GP Canada 2024

It’s going to be a very interesting weekend. We expect quite a bit of rain! This precipitation will not always occur during training, qualifying or racing, but it will clean the track again.

  • Friday: 22 degrees, cloudy, occasional showers, wind force 1 SW
  • Saturday: 18 degrees, cloudy, occasional showers, wind force 2 SW
  • Sunday: 18 degrees, cloudy, occasional showers, wind force 2 WSW

Chances Max Verstappen GP Canada 2024?

Even though Verstappen does not win all the races this season, he has a great team and a very fast car. It works best with long straights and there are those in Canada! So the RB20 will do a lot better here. Verstappen will also be challenged to the core to achieve another great victory.

Surprise GP Canda 2024?

Given the varying conditions, we expect Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso to do well. Pay attention to Carlos Sainz, he can also handle changing weather well. Of course we also make a wild guess: Lance Stroll. It can occasionally be surprisingly fast in the rain.

What do the betting shops say about the 2024 Canadian GP?

Max Verstappen is the favorite with 4/9, but Leclerc and Norris are relatively close behind with 9/2 and 11/2.

You can follow the race in various ways. We discuss the options, what they cost and what their pros and cons are.

F1 TV

If you want to follow everything from the race weekend, you can do so with F1TV. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to take out a one-year subscription, it now costs 11.99 per month, regardless of the month (and how many races there are in that month).

Viaplay

Viaplay is slightly more expensive at €17.99 per month, but you get a lot of extra things in return, such as films, series and other sports. Interesting detail: you automatically get F1TV with Viaplay.

VPN

Given the prices, it is understandable that you are looking for alternatives. You can log in to Luxembourg or Austria via a VPN and then watch via the RTL Luxembourg or ORF website.

Streams

You can also follow the race via a weak stream, but it is not ideal. Check here for some streams that (can) work.

Grand Prix Radio

Grand Prix Radio is Olav Mol’s station. In addition to great music, the race is also covered here in the old-fashioned fun way. Using a slider you can synchronize the sound with the image you have.

Prediction GP Canada 2024

Jaap

  1. Verstappen
  2. Pérez
  3. Piastri

I think the Honda Tor is the most powerful in the field and I Canada there is a lot of full throttle. It’s actually a bit of a stop-go. Straight section, heavy braking zone, straight section, heavy braking zone, straight section, heavy braking zone.

Some of those straights may not be completely straight, but you get the idea. It is not without reason that when cars could still break down, an engine or brake would sometimes fail.

I think Sainz needs another good weekend and Piastri might be able to continue his good form from Monaco, even if it still rains a bit. So let’s put them on stage with Max.

Jaap, is happy that we are out of Europe.

Michael

  1. Verstappen
  2. Pérez
  3. Leclerc

And so in a few races everything is different. Or not? It’s nice that doubts about Max’s victory creep into your head so slowly. And for the rest of the world, there are apparently opportunities again for chauvinists other than the Dutch.

I think it’s time for Max to just get another convincing win. Checo is also happy that he can stay on board and, according to Jaapiyo, continues to earn Max’s salary with his merchandise sales.

Michael, is only chauvinistic with Verstappens.

GP Canada 2024

Wouter

  1. Verstappen
  2. Sainz
  3. Piastri

It seems to be going to rain. Just for Checo: that’s when water falls from the sky and the roads become slippery. In Mexico it hardly rains, in Canada quite often, in the Netherlands we don’t know any better and since you all drive polluting cars it also rains much more often in Germany and France.

Wouter can do rain dances very well.
