Now completely official: the renewed Volvo XC90

The current XC90 is almost 10 years old, but is now starting a second life with a thorough facelift.

It was already announced and leaked, but now it’s actually here: the renewed XC90. Volvo still wants to bet on two horses and therefore continues to deliver the ‘old’ XC90 in addition to the fully electric EX90.

We don’t even need to put ‘old’ in quotation marks, because this generation has been on the market for 9 years. And the XC90 is not retiring any time soon. Fortunately, the design is quite timeless. Volvo also didn’t have to make any major changes to make the car look completely fresh again.

If you look closely, the nose is completely new. The headlights, grille and bumper have all been redesigned. The headlights – still with the familiar hammer – and the grille are now attached to each other. What stands out about the grille are the diagonal lines, which we have not seen before on Volvo. The rear has remained largely the same. The LED lighting is different, but the shape of the units seems identical.

An interior often dates the fastest, so Volvo has renewed this extensively. With a large ‘tablet’ in the middle of the dashboard, the XC90 is completely up-to-date again. The rest of the dashboard has also been renewed, including vertical air vents. Also nice: there is more storage space and an extra cup holder.

As we already knew, the renewed XC90 is only available as a plug-in hybrid in the Netherlands. This was the only version left in the current price list anyway. Volvo does not go into detail regarding the specifications, they only mention an electric range of 70 km. So it seems that little has changed in the drivetrain.

There are places where plugging in is less convenient than in the Netherlands, so elsewhere Volvo still delivers the renewed XC90 without a plug. In the US, among other places, customers can also opt for the B5 and B6, both mild hybrid.

Volvo has also made the XC90 a little more comfortable, with dampers that individually adapt to the conditions. Air suspension is still optional, for the ultimate in comfort.

Volvo says the updated XC90 can be ordered from today, but we don’t have the prices yet. As soon as we know, we will of course inform you.

I still find it remarkable how the current XC90 still looks fresh. Stately car. The new grill, cool.
