A square box with four wheels, the new Volkswagen Atlas has been leaked.
In which direction is car design moving? We seem to be moving from round shapes to sleek shapes. Think of the current generation BMW M2 or the Hyundai Santa Fe. Cars with a very sleek appearance. The same is in store for the new Volkswagen Atlas, as these leaked images show.
Here in the Netherlands, the Atlas is not very relevant. We know the Touareg as the largest model. In the United States, where big, bigger, biggest is the motto, they have the Atlas. An even more spacious SUV above the Touareg. Nevertheless, we share this leaked Volkswagen Atlas with you, because this design may come to future models of the brand. So also relevant for the Netherlands, in the long term.
Teramont Pro
The attentive reader will not see Atlas on the back, but Teramont Pro. That is correct. In fact, this is the Volkswagen Teramont Pro, a car for the Chinese market. In the Asian country, this model is available through the SAIC-VW joint venture. However, we Westerners know the model as the Atlas and this is the new one.
The photos were leaked via the Chinese Ministry of Industry, Information and Technology. The most striking thing about this design are the light units. They are quite prominently designed. The lower part of the back reminds me a bit of the Range Rover Velar, if you’re talking about the shape at least.
It is certainly not as boxy as the cars I described in the intro of this article. There are clearly less curves present. The leaked images of the new Volkswagen Atlas, er Teramont Pro, only show the exterior of the SUV. The interior is still a surprise.
With these leaked photos, an actual unveiling will not be long in coming. Aim for a presentation later this year. Modern, but not exciting. A real practical Volkswagen with a modern face, it seems.
