BMW M5 (G60) official – modern icon with 727 horses

Eight cylinders, two turbo units and an electric motor are the recipe for the new BMW M5. Despite more power, the new M5 is slower than its predecessor.

After more than 40 years, it’s time for the seventh-generation BMW M5 – the first with an electrified powertrain. The new BMW M5 is a plug-in hybrid.

A welcome news is that the BMW M5 will come as a station wagon, but we will have to wait patiently for that. First up is the sedan that will premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England in July 2024.

More power and leaner, but not faster

The heart of the new creation is of course the V8 of 4.4 liters with biturbo. Which delivers 585 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. That’s only 15bhp less than the predecessor and should be enough perhaps? But no!

The BMW M5 also has an electric motor of 197 hp and 280 Nm in constant torque and 450 Nm temporarily. In total, the system output is 727 hp and the torque 1,000 Nm.

0-100 km/h goes in 3.5 seconds, compared to 3.4 seconds for the lighter predecessor. The new BMW M5 G60 weighs 2,445 kg, which is 24 percent more than the M5 G30. The weight distribution is 50:50.

The upside is lower consumption. The predecessor drank 11.1–11.3 liters of petrol per ten miles. With the battery completely discharged, the new BMW M5 G60 draws 10.3-10.2 liters. With a charged battery, fuel consumption drops to 1.7-1.6 liters per ten miles if you drive according to the WLTP cycle.

Almost seven miles range on electricity

Those who want to drive completely electrically (e.g. in cities with a strict environmental zone) may find it useful to know that it can be driven at 140 km/h on electricity. The range is stated at just under seven miles on electricity.

The battery is 18.5 kWh and can be charged with 7.4 kW home charging (AC).

The body is based on the G60 generation, which houses both the electric BMW i5 and the classic 5 series with combustion engines. The BMW M5 has of course received some extra bling bling and lull lull in the form of stronger wheel arches, its own bumper, special rims – and if you pay extra, you also get some carbon fiber details.

The interior is recognizable from the G60 siblings, but has been given a more sporty touch.

BMW M5 (G60) price and delivery

Production at the BMW factory in Dingolfing starts in July 2024. The Swedish price for the new BMW M5 starts at SEK 1,590,000. In November 2024, the BMW M5 Touring will be introduced.
