BMW ordered to pay customer .7 million for door that severed thumb

Soft close doors are fun, just not when your thumb is caught in between.

There are plenty of ways to get hurt in a car, but getting your finger caught in a door is a pretty lame one. Still, it can be pretty annoying. A BMW X5 owner lost part of his thumb after it got caught in his soft-close door. It didn’t make a sound, mind you.

The incident happened in 2016, so it’s basically old news. However, the victim filed a lawsuit against BMW and there is now a verdict. BMW has to pay the guy the equivalent of 1.7 million euros. Three guesses in which country this happened.

Indeed, it was an American who lost his thumb. He had initially demanded even more money from BMW, namely 3 million dollars. Because of his injury he lost income and apparently he had a well-paid job. He was a self-employed software engineer and according to him he now lost 250,000 dollars a year.

According to BMW, it was really the man’s own fault, who simply should not have stuck his thumb in the door. That was clearly stated in the instruction manual. And there was nothing wrong with the doors.

Unfortunately for BMW, the judge ruled in favor of the customer. The judge also found 3 million dollars a bit excessive, but the man can now count on 1.7 million dollars.

By the way, this is not the first lawsuit about soft close doors. In 2021, an American Mercedes GLE owner suffered the same fate. He also lost a piece of his thumb. So if you have soft close doors, the advice here is NOT to put your fingers in between.
