Euro NCAP: Dacia, Jeep and Suzuki get back lessons in crash tests

Several new car models receive top ratings in crash tests by Euro NCAP. But two brands receive homework with “mediocre” ratings.

Briefly
  • Euro NCAP has crash tested several new cars. The Jeep Avenger, Suzuki Swift and Dacia Duster are relegated to a three-star rating.
  • Two Renault models receive four stars.
  • The Audi Q6 e-tron, on the other hand, is praised with a five-star rating.

Euro NCAP has released a new round of results from the organization’s crash tests. Several car models receive the top rating of five stars – but the car group Stellantis gets homework.

Most surprising is that the Jeep Avenger electric car, which was named Car of the Year 2023, only gets three stars. It is unusual among brand new cars and is described by Euro NCAP as “mediocre”.

The autobrake is criticized for poor warning and Stellantis has agreed to update the warning system. But even so, the car underperforms when it comes to avoiding accidents with both pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists. The result is relatively poor in all sub-moments.

Homework for the budget brand

Even the new generation Dacia Duster gets a three-star rating with only 70 percent in the sub-moment protection for adults. Dacia has received a bad rating from Euro NCAP several times before.

The Suzuki Swift also has to settle for three stars and weak ratings for both child and adult protection.

The Audi Q6 e-tron receives special praise for good crash protection for both adults and children in the event of an accident.

“Descent” for Renault

Renault Captur and Symbioz pass the limit of four stars, which also stands out because Renault was early on with a five-star car in Euro NCAP during the 1990s.

It is also a “downgrade” because the previous generation Captur received five stars. But the Renault models Espace and Rafale, which were also crash tested, received five stars.

– The four-star rating is a sign that Renault no longer seems to be aiming for a top position, even though these cars made a solid impression, says Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP.

The electric cars Audi Q6 e-tron, Ford Explorer and Xpeng G6 all deliver a five-star crash test rating. So does the Subaru Crosstrek and its sibling model Impreza, Mercedes E-class, Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Superb, Skoda Kodiaq and BMW X2.
