Ferrari’s CEO promises: The first electric car will be a success

Ferrari will launch its first electric car in 2026. CEO Benedetto Vigna reveals details about production and the new E building at the Maranello campus.

It is Autocar that has had a conversation with Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna about the upcoming electric car. Vigna confirmed that it will be unveiled next year and that it will go on sale in 2026.

Spy shots have shown test versions of the electric car model in modified Maserati Levante chassis, which could provide clues as to what the final car might look like. Whether the final product is fully comparable to the Levant, however, remains to be seen.

Notably, Ferrari used Maserati’s SUV as the basis for the first Ferrari Purosangue prototype, which is very different from the present-day Purosangue.

It’s possible that Ferrari could try to mimic the dynamic characteristics of its internal combustion engine cars by centering the batteries in the chassis.

Vigna said he expects the new electric car to appeal to both existing Ferrari customers and tech-savvy newcomers to the marque.

A recent report from Reuters suggested that the electric car will be priced from $500,000 and that a second electric model is already in development. Vigna called these reports “a surprise” and refused to confirm any of these details. He added: “The way we set the price of a car is a month before we launch it.”

Ferrari will offer combustion engine, hybrid and electric models in the future. The distribution between these models will be determined by customer demand, not by sales or production targets.

The electric car will be produced in the company’s new E building, which has recently opened on the Maranello campus. The facility includes an advanced production line that will be commissioned in January 2025. Production there will likely start with the Purosangue and SF90 before the electric car joins in 2026.
