RIP Suzuki Jimny: Victim of the EU

After this weekend, the Suzuki Jimny will no longer be for sale. And that’s the EU’s fault.

Sympathy doesn’t sell cars, that’s how colleague @720s started his article last week about this fine Suzuki. A compact off-road vehicle for the enthusiast, that Suzuki Jimny and Loek already feared for its future. Prophetic words, the die is cast: after this weekend the car will no longer be for sale in Europe. And that is the fault of the EU.

Then the new ‘Vehicle General Safety Regulation’ will apply to all cars that are sold new. Since last year it has applied to all newly introduced cars and now to every new car sold. So also to models that were already on the market before 2022.

In these expensive times there are more and more regulations that new cars have to comply with and many manufacturers are focusing on fully electric cars. Then it is simply not profitable for those manufacturers to update current models with expensive and complicated safety systems.

The Japanese brand previously indicated that the Suzuki Ignis will disappear for that reason and now at the last minute also that nice, cool and tough Suzuki Jimny. Still a bit of a shock.

The current Jimny has been with us since 2018 and is an SUV with real off-road qualities. The car is intended as a budget off-road vehicle, but in the Netherlands that has gone a bit wrong with the BPM.

Yet you still see quite a few driving around in our country. That is the power of the cool off-road vehicle that holds its own. As of this weekend, the Jimny is a victim of the EU and can no longer be ordered new. Perhaps there is still a stock model or otherwise a nice young occasion?
