The academic appeal: Stop Toyota in the Olympics

Toyota will market its hydrogen vehicles during the Olympics in Paris as a solution to climate change. In an open letter, over 100 people object to the plans.

The Japanese car manufacturer Toyota believes in hydrogen technology and hydrogen-powered fuel cell cars. During the Olympic Games in Paris, Toyota will market various hydrogen-powered vehicles as a solution to climate change. Among other things, the Toyota Mira is the official car of the Olympics. But now both the Olympic Committee and Toyota are facing resistance.

In an appeal, 120 academics, scientists and engineers want to stop the marketing, which Allt om Elbilar was the first to report on.

In an open letter, the 120 people believe that Toyota is hindering the green transition and risks the Olympic Games’ reputation. They urge the organization to replace the Mirai with a battery-powered electric car as the United Nations Climate Panel, IPCC, believes that battery-powered electric cars are the most effective way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from passenger transport, while hydrogen risks delaying and delaying the process.

In addition, they believe that hydrogen-powered vehicles require three times more than corresponding battery-powered electric cars.

The letter has been handed over to the President of the 2024 Olympics, the Director of Transport for the 2024 Olympics, as well as the President of the Olympic Committee.
