Volkswagen will launch the super platform in 2028

Development work was paused due to problems with software development, but the Volkswagen Group’s new car platform will soon be built.

The next generation of electric cars from the Volkswagen Group will be built on a new platform that will be launched in 2028. The platform is a move to match the Chinese electric car competitors, reports Automotive News Europe. In 2022, the plans were paused due to software problems and were not to be launched until the end of the decade, but now new news has arrived.

The SSP architecture (Scalable Systems Platform) will be based on the newest generation of software from Cariad. Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche will use different versions of the platform. The goal for the Volkswagen Group is that production costs will decrease while sales of electric cars will increase.

The architecture enables an electric car to be charged in twelve minutes and supports self-driving at level 4. The first model to be built with the new platform is the Volkswagen Trinity. Even the eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf will be based on the SSP.

The decision on SSP comes as a result of Volkswagen’s reduced sales of electric cars. One of the reasons is Chinese manufacturers who have entered Europe with cheap electric cars. The European Commission is expected to decide shortly on the introduction of punitive tariffs against the Chinese electric cars.
